NEWS: Dubai to replace DXB with mammoth new airport

The new facility will not only increase traffic and connectivity but will once again boost the global profile of the emirate.

An exciting update for anyone investing in Dubai – the chief executive of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, has announced the Group is planning to replace Dubai International Airport (DXB), the busiest international traveller hub in the world, with an even bigger facility.

This comes on the back of reports that Dubai Airports expects to welcome a whopping 86 million passengers by the end of 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Griffiths told the media: “Once we’ve reached about 120m, which is what we think our total capacity at DXB is at the absolute maximum with everything optimised, we are going to need a new airport.”

“That is going to have to happen at some stage during the 2030s. We’re going to be working on those designs over the next few months.”

No dates, deadlines or budget for the future airport was released, but Griffiths said it will have “an industry-changing futuristic design.”

In the short term, the existing airport will be expanded to cover requirements for the next 10 to 15 years, as will Al Maktoum airport.
