NEWS: DLD springs January surprise with 28 area name changes

The renaming includes the likes of Sheikh Zayed Road, Motor City, and Arabian Ranches – further clarifications still awaited.

We know a new year is said to ring in the changes, but we’ll admit we were caught a little off guard by the Dubai Land Department (DLD) suddenly announcing that it has changed the names of some of the city’s best-known neighbourhoods – 28 in fact.

The biggest news, according to the DLD website and local media outlets, is that the Sheikh Zayed Road region will be renamed as Burj Khalifa – while the upscale Emirates Hills First, Second and Third are now identified as Al Thanyah Fifth, Third and Fourth.

Some of the city’s busiest residential areas including Arabian Ranches, Motor City and Sports City, and Jebel Ali Village have also been given new identities.

What this all means in terms of everyday use and signage is still unclear – watch this space for more updates.
